What's New in What's New in Process
Technology |
|
|
|
We're very excited to learn of the impending changes at What's
New in Process Engineering (A Westwick-Farrow
publication). Set for launch in February 2005, the magazine
will be renamed What's New in Process Technology, to more
accurately represent the new technologies that all of us engineers
want to hear about! With more case studies, and focussing
heavily on System Integration and Integrators, the changes are
refreshing and certainly very welcome, as Westwick-Farrow Publishing
continues to keep ahead of the technology wave. For more
information and/or a complimentary subscription, click here.

Static Ice - A New I.T. Related
Price Comparison Search Engine |
|
|
|
We were recently referred to StaticIce.com.au
- Australia's newest hardware and gadget price comparison search
engine, and thought we'd pass the referral on to you too. With an active inventory from over 200 local online
retailers, StaticIce.com.au
is a simple system where you enter the model or make of the item
you're after, and you are returned a list of companies that sell the
item, ordered from lowest to highest price. You can define the
price range you're interested in, use standard Boolean logic, and
even restrict returned listings based on your location. If
you're shopping for a printer cartridge or a cable, right up to
complete PC systems, we found that StaticIce.com.au
is a great place to start - we recommend it because it's what we use
ourselves!

NVSI Projects of the Year - 2004 |
|
NVSI is very proud to announce the
2004 Projects of the Year. The Project Managers of each of the
Winning Projects have demonstrated their commitment to the
Advancement of the both the Technology and the respective Clients
involved - well done!
FlexLOG
Project Leader: Graeme
Bowyer
Client: Publicly Available
Aimed squarely at industries
including environmental monitoring, medical and
pharmaceutical, core R&D, mining, furnace monitoring,
ovens, and standards appliance testing, FlexLOG was created
to easily connect to a wide range of sensors, and log to a
variety of formats. The unique plug-in style
architecture of FlexLOG creates a fully flexible
environment, that makes the addition of future models and
code trivial.

C.A.M.S.
Project Leader: Christopher
Relf
Client: Publicly Available
High repeatability of
component measurements is now a practical reality, with the
NVSI Component Analysis Measurement System (CAMS): a fully
automated non-contact measurement system, CAMS is the
most accurate and repeatable measurement system of its type
in the world. Motorized caddy sample loading, an
in-built NIST-traceable 1,560 point target for calibration,
and a highly intuitive user interface mean making
measurements with CAMS is simple, error free and fully
traceable.

The
Alphachron(tm) System
Project Leader: Laurent
Raynal
Client: CSIRO Exploration
& Mining
Uranium-helium geochronology
is a highly sensitive method of radiometric age dating that
can be used to determine the thermal history of the Earth's
crust, and the CSIRO is developing applications based on the
U-Pb and (U+Th)-He decay schemes to determine the thermal
histories of mineral belts and petroleum basins. NVSI
was approached to create a turnkey solution to tie several
hardware technologies together in order to help develop
R&D laboratory experimentation into a professional,
commercially robust, industry-focused integrated and compact
system.

Large
Environmental Chamber
Project Leader: Liam
Granger
Client: National
Measurements Institute
Part of the National
Measurement Institute pattern approval testing involves the
use of temperature and humidity controlled environmental
chambers. This project relates to a chamber which in
extended form has a volume of 34 square meters, and
temperature setpoints across the chamber were achieved to an
accuracy of +/- 0.1K (an order of magnitude of improvement
over the previous system), and relative humidity (RH) to
+/-1%.

50T
Load Cell Compliance Tester
Project Leader: Laurent
Raynal
Client: National
Measurements Institute
The NMI perform pattern
approval type testing on measuring instruments used for
trade purposes in Australia. Part of this process
involves the use of a 50T Load Cell Measurement System, with
two temperature controlled chambers, used to test and
calibrate third party load cells. The NVSI solution
included a general improvement to the load cell testing
system and the environmental control parameters, with
database control and comprehensive data logging feature,
which proved impossible with currently available
off-the-shelf components.

Automated
Object Inspection System
Project Leader: Alex
Gouliaev
Client: Undisclosed
A leading New Zealand
manufacturing company contracted NVSI to provide a flexible
and cost effective vision-based non-destructive method of
detecting coarse defects on various populated Printed
Circuit Boards (PCBs). NVSI created a proof of concept
software package that performed vision analysis using
low-cost, commercially available technology, including Ethernet
communication, IEEE-1394 Firewire(tm) cameras and the
National Instruments Compact Vision System with a real-time
operating system.

A Very Merry Christmas, and a Safe
and Prosperous 2005 to All! |
|
|
|
Whilst the manufacturing industry sector has seen a number of set
backs over the last few years, 2004 was a successful year for
NVSI. Increasing our staff by 233%, opening an expanded office
in Sydney, and the ramp up of operations in New Zealand, it's been a
challenging year for all of our people, but an equally fulfilling
time as well. We've been fortunate to partner with companies
including Sick Sensor Intelligence, MPA Electronics &
Automation, Endevo, Adept Electronics Solutions and National
Instruments, allowing NVSI to cover an extremely broad range of
industries and technology platforms to deliver solutions to our
clients from hourly training sessions to complete turnkey systems.
Of course, we couldn't have enjoyed
our excellent growth and exciting projects without you - our clients
and industry engineers. So, thankyou for keeping Measurement and
Automation alive in the Asia-Pacific region. We certainly look
forward to working with you in 2005. If you're ever near our
office, please drop in for a cappuccino - we'd love to catch up!
